Choosing Doggy Daycare in Thirsk: 7 Questions to Ask First

Doggy daycare quality varies enormously. Before you book anywhere in Thirsk or North Yorkshire, ask these seven questions — and yes, you are very welcome to ask us every one of them.

Doggy daycare has become hugely popular across North Yorkshire, and families around Thirsk have more choice than ever. But quality varies enormously, and a glossy social media page tells you very little about how dogs are actually looked after. Before you book anywhere — including with us — here are the seven questions worth asking.

1. Are you licensed by the local council? Any business providing doggy daycare must hold an animal activities licence from the council. Ours is issued by North Yorkshire Council (Licence Number: ANBRD-191158-E). If a provider cannot give you a licence number, walk away — however lovely their photos look.

2. Can my dog meet you before booking? A good provider insists on a meet and greet rather than treating it as an optional extra. It lets the dogs be introduced calmly and gives you a chance to see where your dog will spend their day. We will not take a daycare booking without one.

3. How many dogs do you take at once, and how are they grouped? There is no single right number, but the answer should be specific, and the groups should be matched by temperament and play style — not simply whoever booked that day.

4. What does a typical day actually look like? You want to hear about walks, play and rest in a real routine. "They just play all day" sounds lovely but usually means overtired, wound-up dogs by teatime.

5. What happens if two dogs do not get along? Every honest provider has had this happen. Listen for a calm, practical answer about separating dogs and calling owners — not "that never happens here".

6. What happens in an emergency? Ask how they would reach you, which vet they use, and who makes decisions if you cannot be contacted. You are trusting someone with a member of your family; they should have thought this through.

7. How will I hear about my dog''s day? You should come away knowing how your dog settled, who they played with and whether anything unusual happened.

Ask us these questions in person — arrange a meet and greet through our contact page or call 07734 363189. We would rather you chose the right daycare than the first one you found.
